Have you always wondered why some men use a brush when they shave? It's not just because they like to go "old school", there are lots of benefits to using a shaving brush. We want to make sure you know what it does, how to choose the perfect one, and how you should use it.
Why use a brush?
Shaving brushes generate a rich warm lather while softening and lifting your whiskers. It opens your pores and brings sufficient water to the skin and gently exfoliates. Using a shave brush will allow the shaving cream to last 1.5 times more than using your fingers.
There are two main types of brush typically used; boar's hair and badger hair. Boar-hair brushes are quite coarse and are less common. Badger-hair brushes are the most popular type of brush, typically chosen because they retain moisture well, along with being soft and flexible.
Different Types of Badger Hair Brushes
Pure Badger is the lowest yet most common grade of badger hair put on shaving brushes. It is also made with dark gray hair.
Fine Badger is the second best badger hair available and is handmade to perfection. It is made with light gray hair.
Silvertip is the best badger hair available. It is made with white hair and has white peaks. All badger hairs are soft and gentle on the face.
With proper care, the badger hair on your shaving brush can last for years.
Each type of brush also comes in different sizes, which are measured by their diameter right above the handle. Larger ones produce more lather and smaller ones are more accurate (better for those with facial hair). If you are just starting out and don't know what size to get, something in the 24 to 26 mm would be a good choice until you know enough to determine your preference.
Directions For Use
- With any shave, using a brush or not, make sure your face is warm and moist, which will open the pores and soften the beard.
- Wet the shaving brush with warm water.
- Place a small amount of shaving cream on the tip or center of brush. You could also try using a shaving soap.
- Bring the cream to a lather on face using a circular motion.
- To generate a fuller richer later, add more hot water to brush.
- Proceed with your shaving routine.
- Finish with a soothing after shave balm.
Proper Care
Rinse brush well with water after each use, shake to remove excess water and store on a brush stand with bristles facing downward.
